Once off the boat we board a bus and get driven to the peaceful town of Sa Dec, which is famous for its many flower and bonsai nurseries. From here it’s back onto our bikes as we continue to Cho Moi, a small town with lush fruit groves. The ride in the morning is relatively easy as we cruise on a smooth paved road along the river. These people live in houses on land but because of the flooding that takes place in the rainy season, they have to build their homes on 3-meter high stilts. Next we are introduced to a fishing village, where local residents make a living from farming fish in cages underneath floating houses. We return to the hotel after the boat trip and pick up our bikes to start our day’s ride on traffic free roads to the Vietnamese killing fields at Ba Chuc. It was here that Pol Pot’s regime massacred over 3,000 Vietnamese in 1978. We stop to visit the local museum. The Mekong is known for its floating markets and an early morning boat trip will take us to visit the largest one in the Delta. You will see a large variety of local produce being sold from all manner of boats, and you can even purchase some too if you feel like bartering. When we get back to shore we’ll embark upon an easy and relaxed day of cycling, on quiet roads full of rice fields, coconut palms & pagodas.
